Blount County wildlife control Tip of the Month:

How do you remove a house mouse stuck in a garbage can or another place?
House mice are annoying little rodents that eat almost anything that you don't want to be eaten. They get in your attic and basement and eat away insulating material, wiring, etc. From time to time, house mice can get trapped in places such as the garbage. In such a place, the mouse can't escape due to the lack of space. If it is trapped, you can choose to end its suffering quickly by killing it. There are a number of ways by which you can kill a mouse quickly and effectively. Apart from killing mice, there also ways by which you can remove them from your house. Mice may also come inside your garage, basement or attic as mentioned above, and there are ways you can remove them from here.

Use Poison to kill
Many people consider this as a very unethical option due to the amount of suffering it will inflict on the animal. The poison will not kill the mouse instantly, and the mouse will stay painfully alive for a few hours.  Additionally, other predators may eat the mouse and be poisoned. This can become cyclical and can result in a serious problem especially if you have pets. Apart from pets, this may also become a threat for little children who tend to touch random things. Therefore, poison isn't a good option at all.

Traps
A trap is quite an effective way to capture and dispose of mice from the house. Traps come in many types as well, and you may select one depending on which one suits you the best.
  • Glue Traps- You can make these traps at home. All you need to do is put glue and a piece of sweet smelling food on a piece of cardboard. The mouse will smell the food, come to get it, and hence get stuck. Once it is trapped, you may choose whether to release it or kill it.
  • Snap traps- These quickly and effectively kill the mouse once it enters the trap. The mouse releases the spring by trying to remove the bait, and the spring releases the rod that snaps the mouse's neck,
  • Exclusion traps- These are holes which allow mice to exit your house, but close once the mouse leaves. Thus the mouse cannot come back inside.

Preventing Mice from Returning
Once you remove mice from your house, you will need to ensure that they don't come back. To do this, you will need to close off all possible entrances. These include all tiny open spaces and holes. Mice can climb uneven surfaces.  They can climb trees and jump through windows or even tiny cracks and holes in your walls. To prevent this, make sure that no food is left open in your house. Mice enter the house in the first place because they smell food. If you remove relevant food sources, the mice will not have any reason to come in in the first place

Conclusion
Killing and removing mice is not the only thing you have to do to solve the mouse problem. You will also have to ensure that they don't come back and to do this you will need to take the measures described above.
